In a quiet moment I was observing my thoughts and some familiars ones came to mind: “I want to be better than someone else”, “I want someone else to lose so that I can win”, “I will attack someone so that I can get what I want”.
All choices in the world depend on this; you choose between your brother and yourself, and you will gain as much as he will lose, and what you lose is what is given him. How utterly opposed to truth is this, when all the lesson’s purpose is to teach that what your brother loses you have lost, and what he gains is what is given you. T-31.IV.8:4,5
We all have thoughts of wining at another’s expense from time to time or if we are really honest, it is a daily occurence! These ego thoughts are inevitable once we believe we are a person living in the world. Our individual consciousness is based on separating from oneness. Our ego believed that our separation was gained at God’s expense.
The concept of “one or the other” is true in the sense that Oneness and separation cannot co-exist: they are mutually exclusive. The ego believes that “one or the other” means that Oneness was destroyed leaving only separation. The Atonement is the correction for this belief, saying that in fact nothing happened: there is only Oneness and the “other” never existed.
Salvation is rebirth of the idea no one can lose for anyone to gain. And everyone must gain, if anyone would be a gainer. T-25VII.12:1,2
No one looses; nothing is taken away from anyone; everyone gains through your holy vision. W-I.37.1:4
Together or not at all T-19.IV-D.12:8
Imagine not needing anything from anyone. Imagine not making any demands of anyone. Imagine not experiencing loss in any situation. Imagine coming from the holy place where you are everything and have everything.
We think we lose because someone takes something from us – but that is not why we lose. We may perceive that another person looses because they lose something physically or emotionally – but our perception of their loss is wrong.
We all lose because we are the dreamers of a dream of loss, of “one or the other”, and of winners and losers.
At the beginning when we as the one Son of God had the thought of winning at our Creator’s expense, we projected out this terrible thought in the making of the world, in an attempt to get rid of it. But the ego did not tell us that projection is really a way of keeping a thought by making it real in our minds. Our projections onto others become our perception in this world.
Our wrong-minded experience of the world is that everyone including ourselves has the mindset of “one or the other”. We perceive others as looking after themselves and not really caring about us. We defend ourselves, our family or our group against others, not really caring about them.
Luckily even this world of “kill or be killed” (M-17.7:11) another thought system can be reflected. In this world the thought of Oneness is expressed as everyone sharing the same purpose. Salvation is a joint venture and on awakening we realize that we have awakened as the one Son of God. The world of separate personalities fighting to protect their individual identities was nothing but a bad dream. The bad dream came from the ego’s unreal though of loss and of “one or the other”.
We need to realize that the ego thought system of loss will never change so there is no point in trying to change our egos. Thankfully we do not have to deny, fix or indulge our ego thoughts because there is another thought system in our minds. The world can be seen to reflect the peace and joy that comes from the right-minded thought system of “no one looses ….everyone gains”.
Let me look on the world I see as the representation of my own state of mind. I know that my state of mind can change. And so I also know the world I see can change as well. W-54.2:4-6
As forgiveness allows love to return to my awareness, I will see a world of peace and safety and joy. And it is this I choose to see, in place of what I look on now. W-55.3:4,5
