Recently I was reminded of how perception is based on the choice of inner teacher. When we perceive loss and pain, we know we have chosen the wrong inner guide.
Instruction in perception is your great need, for you understand nothing. T-11.VII.3:5
Two ways of looking at the world are in your mind, and your perception will reflect the guidance you have chosen. T-12.VII.5:6
I remember the day when I was distraught after suffering a considerable trading loss. Looking at the figures I experienced many horrible thoughts and strong negative emotions.
Perhaps it will be helpful to remember that no one can be angry at a fact. It is always an interpretation that gives rise to negative emotions, regardless of their seeming justification by what appears as facts. M-17.7:11
Our interpretation, perceptions, evaluations and judgments are how we see “facts”. Our emotions are not a direct result of the data on the trading report; the fact the house sale fell through; the behaviour of my child at the dinner table; the rude remark from a neighbour or the fact that my partner is being unfaithful.
I dropped in the situation of infidelity because there are always some events that seem to be the cause of our distress. The terrible situations like the medical report that confirms cancer or the death of a family member seem to justify our reactions. We make a hierarchy of events – some that justify our pain and others where we can see that we are adding our perception to the event.
Perception is a choice and not a fact. T-21.V.1:7
Perception is a mirror, not a fact W-pII.304.1:3
Ultimately and thankfully we need to learn that no perception of distress is ever true. We need to be grateful for the workbook as a reminder of the inner choice we have the power to make.
The purpose of the workbook is to train your mind in a systematic way to a different perception of everyone and everything in the world. W-in..4:1
In summary we first make an inner choice at to what teacher or guidance we will follow. Our perception of “facts” or events in the world follows as a direct result or manifestation of our inner choice. This sequence reveals the power of our mind. We can decide for holiness and then we see the world as holy. Not that the “facts” of the world are holy – it how we perceive them.
The power of decision is you one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world. You can decide to see it right. T-12.VII.9:1
