When Jesus implores us in A Course in Miracle to “choose once again” he is implying that we have already made a choice.
What choice have we already made?
The choice for the ego – the wrong choice!
How does the ego prevent us from changing our minds?
Simple: the ego convinces us that we don’t have a mind. We deny or repress the choice we made for the ego and then project the ego’s thought system outside our mind. This projection was the creation of the physical universe including our individual bodies. We identified with the ego thought system in out mind, and so now in the world we identify with being a separate body and personality in a world of multiplicity. Denial and projection are the key defenses of the ego thought system.
Defenses are not unintentional, nor are they made without awareness. They are secret, magic wands you wave when truth appears to threaten what you would believe. They seem to be unconscious but because of the rapidity with which you choose to use them. In that second, even less, in which the choice is made, you recognize exactly what you would attempt to do, and then proceed to think that it is done.
Who but yourself evaluates a threat, decides escape is necessary, and sets up a series of defenses to reduce the threat that has been judged as real? All this cannot be done unconsciously. But afterwards, your plan requires that you must forget you made it, so it seems to be external to your own intent; a happening beyond your state of mind, an outcome with a real effect on you, instead of one effected by yourself.
It is this quick forgetting of the part you play in making your “reality” that makes defenses seem to be beyond your own control. W-136.3:1-5:1
So the ego’s strategy of forgetting that we have a mind let alone remembering the wrong decision we have made, is brilliant. There is almost no way out.
The case may be fool-proof, but is not God-proof. T5.VI.10:6 Into this hopeless and closed learning situation, which teaches nothing but despair and death, God sends His teaches… Except for God’s teachers there would be little hope of salvation for the world of sin would seem forever real. M-in.4:7 & 5:1
If we think personal decisions and the decisions of the world are what matters then we are saying that we don’t want to return to our minds and learn there is only one decision to undo.
Choosing the miracle or our daily forgiveness lessons, gradual undoes our bodily identity and so we are gradually more and more open to experience the Holy Spirit’s teaching that we are mind and not a body.
I am not a body. I am free. W-199
Blaming others for how we feel reinforces projection and denies our prior decision for the ego. When we use others to meet our needs and wants we again reinforce our bodily identity and deny we have everything.
The miracle reverses projection and allows us to look at our wrong choice without feeling guilty. Our power within the dream is as a decision maker or chooser in our minds. Our egos will resist every step in remembering our mistaken choice, so we need to hold the hand of Jesus as we gently return our awareness to our minds. The purpose of a ACIM could be described as making our unconscious decision conscious.
