One great way the ego keeps us from returning to our minds and our one choice there, is to make choices in this world important, endless and serious!
You need to be reminded that you think a thousand choices are confronting you, when there is really only one to make….Do not confuse yourself with all the doubts that myriad decisions would induce. You but make one. W-138.4:1, 3-4 Consider what temptation is, and see the real alternatives you choose between. There are but two. Be not deceived by what appears as many choices. There is hell or Heaven, and of theses you choose but one. T-31.VII.14:6-9
The myriad of choices that this world offers to make our individual lives secure and comfortable are purposeful. When we deliberate and are anxious over choices around nutrition, education, friendships, work, environment and how we get our psychological needs meet we at focusing on the world for a reason.
The correction is not to deny that in this world there are choices to be made but to deny that the world’s choices will give us what we really want. Making choices in this world important is a way of forgetting the one choice in our mind, and we are using the world as a defense from returning to our minds. Simply put the ego’s plan is to keep us mindless.
Even if we are not ready to be directed back to our inner choice we can at least be open to look at the results of our believing that choices in this world will bring us happiness.
Seek not outside yourself. For it will fail, and you will weep…Seek not outside yourself. For your pain comes simply form a futile search for what you want, insisting where it must be found. What if it is not there?. Do you prefer to be right or happy? T-29.VII:1-2, 6-9 Illness is some form of external searching. Health is inner peace. T-2.I.5:10-11 The role assigned to your own mind in this plan, then is simply to determine what, other than itself, must change if you are to be saved. According to this insane plan, any perceived source of salvation is acceptable provided that it will not work. This ensures that the fruitless search will continue, for the illusion persists that, although this hope has always failed, there is still grounds for hope in other places and in other things. W-71.3:1-3
When we stubbornly insist that choices in this world will bring us happiness we are really saying that the choice we made in our mind was the right choice. Only when we gently and gradually become open to consider that we made a wrong choice do we see that happiness lies in choosing again and does not lie in the many choices of this world.
Our resistance to admitting we are wrong is enormous because admitting we made a wrong choice is the same as saying that we as individuals do not exist!
When we choose to identify with our individual existence we are by default going to make the choices of the world important and serious. So we have to start where we are, we have to start with being concerned with the world and our choices here and ask for help knowing that our happiness lies else where.
