The first two rules in the “Rules for Decision” section in Chapter 30 in A Course in Miracle let us know in practical language how we get the day we want. The quotes are followed by my take on the rules.
The proper set (of decisions), adopted consciously each time you awake, will put you well ahead. Think about the kind of day you want, and tell yourself there is a way in which this very day can happen just like that. The outlook starts with this:
Rule 1: Today I will make no decision by myself.
Throughout the day, at any time you think of it and have a quiet moment for reflection tell yourself again the kind of day you want; the feeling you would have, the things you want to happen to you, and the things you would experience and say:
Rule 2: If I make no decisions by myself, this is the day that will be given me.
These two procedures, practiced well, will serve to let you be directed without fear, for opposition will not first arise and then become a problem in itself.
It must be clear that it is easier to have a happy day if you prevent unhappiness from entering at all. But this takes practice. T-30.I
Rule 1: Today I choose to make decisions with the Voice for God (Guide, Jesus or Holy Spirit) or the voice of judgement (ego, anti-Christ, idols).
Rule 2: I decide with my Guide or the ego and our joint agreement causes the day to happen, not at random but according to how the friend whose counsel I have sought perceives my happiness.
So if I start out by thinking about the sort of day I want, I might come up with:
I want to feel happiness and peace. I want things to happen to me that bring me joy. I want to experience love.
Joining with the ego I would at the best feel the short lived happiness and peace that comes from satisfying my personal needs and the seeming joy that depends on specific things happening that I like. Love would be based on mutual satisfaction of separate interests.
Joining with the Voice for God I would feel the happiness and peace that results from
an inner awareness that we are all connected, and the joy that comes from knowing we share the same purpose of returning to Love. I would experience the love and joining that comes from forgiveness and miracles.
The exact same things could happen in my day but depending on my choice of advisor I will reinforce separation or sameness, vulnerability or wholeness.
It may be that as a result of my inner choice, very different things will happen to me but that is not my focus. My focus is deciding in advance for Happiness or unhappiness.
The ego always seeks to divide and separate. The Holy Spirit always seeks to unify and heal. T-7.IV. 5:2-3
