Do you forget you choose all the time?
Let us accept for a moment that how you feel is a choice.
Can you then believe that you are making decisions about how you feel and think in every moment?
I recall years ago having a profound experience of choosing to feel upset on a beautiful day, in a beautiful place with my beautiful family. The fact that the external situation was almost perfect allowed me to be aware of what my mind was doing. I was making a conscious choice to feel annoyed but there was nothing to be annoyed about. I was able to watch something habitual happening and see I was making a decision to be annoyed.
We have all probably had the opposite experience of being in a challenging situation and choosing to be peaceful instead of upset. When we didn’t react with defense or blame but stayed calm and relaxed in the midst of the chaos, we were demonstrating the power of inner choice.
These situations where our feelings are in stark contrast to our environment are great reminders the inner choices we are making all the time.
In everyday situations there seems to be many possible external causes for how we feel and it becomes harder to see the inner decisions we are making.

It is incredibly powerful to remember the simple teaching in ACIM that we are only ever choosing between two thoughts – love or fear (the ego or the Holy Spirit). We don’t have to analyse every single thought to know what is going on but just be aware that in every moment the choice is between love and fear.
When we are willing to remember occasions in which we are clearly making a choice then we are ready to remember that we are making decisions all the time.
Decisions are continuous. You do not always know when you are making them. But with a little practice with the ones you recognize, a set begins to form which sees you through rest Text 30. I. 1:1-2
