Are you afraid of your power to choose?
In A Course in Miracles it is fascinating that ”forgetting” and “not remembering” are always a decision or a choice.
There is even a section with the amazing title “The Decision to Forget”. The section uses the word “dissociation”, but before we have time to worry about what the word means, the Course defines it: “dissociation is nothing more than a decision to forget”.
The section explains our decision to forget God (Love, Truth, our Self, knowledge) is the cause of all our fear. It is not that we fear God but our decision to forget Him. That is a powerful distinction when you think about it!
I have rewritten part of the section substituting the word “dissociation” with the words “decision to forget” and “dissociated” with “decided to forget”.
And you have replaced your knowledge by an awareness of dreams because you are afraid of your decision to forget (dissociation), not of what you have decided to forget (dissociated). Text. Chapter 10. 1:5
Or again in my own words:
You have replaced awareness of Love as your true Self with the dreams of a fearful self in a fearful world because you are afraid of your decision to forget, not the Love that you have forgotten.
It is amazing to think that we are afraid of choice.
We are afraid of our power to decide and of one decision in particular.
Why would we be afraid of choice?
The ego tells us we are afraid of lots of things including Love and so if we listen to the ego we are never aware that we are afraid of our mind’s power to choose.
What if the power to decide is the only way out of the dream?
What would happen to our separated, fearful, victimised self if we remembered our power to choose?
Being afraid of the power to decide would be a clever tactic if we never wanted to wake up from the dream!
We do not have to remember the original decision to forget Love (not possible anyway) because we have all of our everyday decisions to work on!
The decision to take things personally, the decision to try and manipulate others and the world to give us what we want, are all a reflection of the original decision to forget who were truly are.
If we ask for help with everyday decisions we are really owning the choice to forget Love rather than being afraid of it. Then we will naturally remember Love.
