If your thoughts are the cause of how you feel then you could assume that you need to change your thoughts to feel better. But is trying to change your thoughts a problem in itself?
Before enlightenment, I used to be depressed; after enlightenment, I continue to be depressed. You don’t make a goal out of relaxation and sensitivity. Have you ever heard of people who get tense trying to relax? If one is tense, one simply observes one’s tension. You will never understand yourself if you seek to change yourself. The harder you try to change yourself the worse it gets.
You want to feel better and now you are aware of the danger of trying to do something to make your fearful thoughts go away. You are no longer tempted to distract yourself by turning on the TV, drinking alcohol or going out for a meal. You know that trying to change your circumstances, thinking they are the cause of how you feel, is definitely not going to work. You recognise that denying your painful thoughts is powerful idea but not truly helpful. Then you remember you read that book about positive thinking and so you try to think positive thoughts.
You have not understood yourself. You have made happiness into a goal. You have forgotten that you are responsible for your fear. You have forgotten your negative thoughts are not the problem.
The problem is that you chose your negative thoughts. If you try to change the thoughts themselves then you deny the power of choice. If you are reacting to painful thoughts by trying to change the thoughts themselves you have fallen into a trap. You have made you thoughts the problem and forgotten about choice.
How about just observing your thoughts and feelings and not doing anything about them?
How about just watching them without believing them or judging them?
How about looking at your choice for painful thoughts and not reacting?
Observing, watching and looking allows you to calmly see the power of your wrong choice. The choice to be miserable and to feel let down. The choice to be a victim of life and not responsible for what happens to you.
It is not your thoughts that are the problem – it is your choice of thoughts.
Choice is the problem and so the solution is to make another choice.
Observing, watching and looking are the other choice. The choice that opens up the door to remembering thought with a capital “T”.
The Thought of what you really are is a Thought of Love.
In remembering Love you do not have to make any effort to think happy thoughts because happiness is what you are!
