If you experience that how you feel is decided by others, or what happens to you then you are not going to really care how you feel.
It’s depressing to completely care about something you can’t control.
You can’t control everything that happens to you.
You end up accepting that you are going to have to go through life having negative reactions to certain situations because your control is limited.
You resign yourself to anger, resentment and all sorts of negative feelings because you have no real choice.
You can of course try to control external events. Some people spend a lot of energy insisting or demanding that the people behave in a certain way so that they can feel good about themselves. Although even if it seems to work the cost is enormous for everyone.
Thinking that if we manipulate others and events then we’ll feel better is flawed thinking and ultimately leads to depression and despair. Not only because it’s impossible to control the world but even if we could, would we want to be dependent on external events to be happy? We would lose connection with our true self which is happiness.
Imagine having the miraculous experience that you are in control of how you feel, and nothing external to your mind can affect you in any way except by your own decision! This mind shift leads to freedom. Now you can afford to really care how you feel because you know you control how you feel.
“I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve. And everything that seems to happen to me I ask for, and receive as I have asked.” Text. Chapter 21.II.2:3-5
You may find that even after this miracle you vary between accepting responsibility for how you feel and behaving as if others decide how you feel. Until one day you choose to become a professional and you own without exceptions that in any moment you decide how you feel.
