Distinguishing between love and fear, you might think, is easy. One obvious way, it seems, is to be aware of how you feel.
You feel happy when you get your needs met.
But when you’re getting your needs met, are you not thinking that love is outside, and it’s something to be gained?
Sorrow and pain also seem to be outside and need to be avoided.
“You want to be happy. You want peace. You do not have them now, because your mind is totally undisciplined, and you cannot distinguish between joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, love and fear. You are now learning how to tell them apart. And great indeed will be your reward.”
A Course in Miracles Workbook, Lesson 20.2:4-8
Could you be confused about what will make you happy?
Needs and ideas based on separation, individuality and autonomy seem worth pursuing.
But will they ever bring you real pleasure and joy?
“You are unaware as yet of any thought that is really true, and therefore really happy.”
A Course in Miracles Workbook, Lesson 17.3:3
Thoughts of oneness, connection and joy stand quietly waiting for you to choose them.
You’ll be open to them when you ready for something other than the passing
joys of this world. Then you’ll choose an inner teacher who knows the real
path to love. A teacher who has your best interests at heart. One who knows what you really want
and pays no attention to what you think you want.
Gradually you will learn to ask, “What are true thoughts of happiness?” and you will receive them.
You don’t have to make up happy thougths. You don’t have to make an effort to think positive
rather than negative. Joyful, happy, pleasurable and loving thoughts will be given to you.
