Do you keep uncomfortable thoughts just because they’re true?
“The unexamined life is not worth living” Socrates
A few months ago I read a sign in the wash room in the cinema that said if you wash your hands and don’t dry them properly, the risk of transferring bacteria, goes up 10,000 times! I immediately passed this information onto my son who didn’t like drying his hands with hot air driers.
A few days later Catia and I were discussing washing dirty eggs before cracking them. She was OK with washing them and then cracking them when they were still wet. I was sure with my new found belief that she was making a mistake. I was getting irritated when she did not agree with my thoughts on the subject. My new belief was causing me stress.
Why would I want to hold on to any thought that brings me stress even if it’s true?
Why would you?
Is it good enough reason to believe something stressful just because most people do? Do you hold beliefs that you are not comfortable with because you learned it from your parents or a reputable source?
To learn this course requires willingness to question every value that your hold. Not one can be kept hidden and obscure but it will jeopardize your learning. No belief is neutral. Text 24. in2:1-3
If we really respected the power of our thinking and our believing we would say “NO” to any stress causing belief. We would simply let it go.
In fact we would not even pick it up in the first place. We would be walking though life and the negative ideas would just pass us by. They would have no attraction to us. In our peaceful, good feeling space we only see what adds to our inner joy and happiness.
Do you really want to be free of all limiting beliefs or do you just want to keep a few?
Just think of the cost. Any stressful belief will result in uncomfortable feelings, actions based on fear and a perception of danger and threat. Do you want that?
Here are a few practical points:
If questioning a belief brings up some resistance or discomfort then you know you are doing some important inner work.
The question is not “is this thought true or not?”.
The question is “do you want to give this stressful thought room in your mind even if it is true?
