A very useful exercise in your spiritual path that can help you with identifying your thoughts, in situations of conflict or any other circumstance, is to act only as a witness to the scenes that unfold in your life. This is the exercise of self-observation.
Imagine if you, in a conflict with a loved one, could separate what you think and feel about the conflict, and simply look at what is happening without suffering.
Be an observer.
If this observation were possible at all times, you wouldn’t be a victim of the circumstances. Instead, you would have the serenity to respond to the situation rather than react to it. That would avoid much suffering.
Okay, you may be wondering: but how to practice this exercise of watching my mind?
A very useful tool in your awakening journey is the use of commented movies. They can help you to get in touch with your thoughts and beliefs in a detached way. Although you get involved with the script of a movie, there is a certain distance as you know it is a fiction, an illusion. This allows you to observe, in a playful way, the behavioral manifestations when you give a different purpose to watching a movie.
The illustrative form of the movie provides many moments of deep insights because you can see your feelings and thoughts about the situations while the scenes unfold.
David Hoffmeister, in his book Quantum Forgiveness, offers a spectacular experience of knowing yourself using a guided way to watch movies that was specifically tailored for awakening. In this book, David discusses six films in a very profound way and based on the teachings of A Course in Miracles.
John Mark Stroud also comments movies and upload them on his website.
His light and joyful way to comment the movies will certainly touch your heart.
Those are only some tips on how you can use entertainment as a means to know your own thoughts and to understand the metaphysical teachings. In this way, it is possible to use a laid-back approach to get to know yourself, the only way to happiness.
The Miracle Choice game is also an incredible tool with which you can access your thoughts and feelings in everyday situations and an opportunity to take that step back, so essential in the process of self-knowledge. It is an invitation for the player to observe their choices in a safe way, as it promotes reflections and insights without having to go through the suffering often perceived in the situations.
The path of self-awareness and awakening does not have to be rigid. Whatever tool you choose, the game, a commented movie, an immersion weekend, you just have to remember to have fun and enjoy that process.
After all, in doing this, you can be reminded that life is not to be painful but rather a joyful manifestation of your real Self and you are shift from your choices of fear to the choice of Love.
I have just spent the day with a small group of people in Sweden who have met every 2 weeks for the last year to play the Miracle Choice board game. I don’t think this has happened in the history of the game. It was amazing for me to hear:
“Amazing and almost too much.”
“Took a whole 2 weeks for the insights to really sink in.”
“The cards were always spot on.”
During the year they experimented with different ways to play the game. One group member found it easier to get up and walk around to get insights from the cards rather than sitting still. Jokingly they said “The game should come with a warning – highly addictive!”
I am very touch to see how a powerful ongoing learning tool the game can be.
I would like to find a way to support and encourage Miracle Choice playing groups who meet regular to play the new Pocket Edition. Stuart one of the Swedish group has the idea to create a journal to support ongoing learning so we will be working on that together.
So between movie watching and playing games how much fun can your life be?
Juliana in her video below actually plays a clip from a animated movie and helps you learn by commenting on what is happening. I learned a lot and I highly recommend watching it.
Much love, James, Catia and Juliana.
