I was getting my hair cut recently and as is often the way the conversation turned to holidays. After I explained that I was going to travel soon the hairdresser said “that will be a good opportunity to switch off.” The words “switch off” caught my attention. She was meaning to switch off from the usual routine, tasks, thinking, concerns and worries.
Is there a kind of internal switch that you can use to switch from one way of experiencing or thinking to another? Do you allow yourselves to be a different self on holiday? Perhaps laid back, open, humorous and accepting? And yet even on holidays you can at times “switch back” to the old self when something seems to trigger you.
Maybe when you’re changing from being a stressed self at work to a relaxed self on holidays you are not really switching off at all, but just switching from one ego self to another? Maybe both selves are still based on an separate identity surviving in a challenging world?
The significant switch I believe is not between being a good self and a bad self, a relaxed self or a stressed self, a peaceful self rather than an anxious self, but rather the switch between truth and illusion. Truth is the joy of living as who you were meant to be and connecting to the love in all others. It is switching off from a self who is alone and separate in a world that has to be defended against or controlled. It is “switching on” to knowing the world is benevolent, that you are provided for and part of a flow that is life itself.
You could say we are all in the process of learning how to switch off from fear and “switch on” to love.
I believe we are all “switching on” our true self more and more. We are allowing who we are to shine through not just on holidays but during our everyday life. It’s important to know that we have control of the switch. Realising that the environment or other people are not the cause of how we feel, how we behave and who we consider ourselves to be. It’s having the willingness to choose to let go of our old patterns and ideas. Eventually you’ll have the complete willingness to “switch on” your true self with your whole heart and live completely as a loving being. Not trying to live as a good person but to live as who you are in truth.
