I remember once when my son said to me in a playful way “Dad don’t choose fear!” I appreciated the reminder, but I also got a bit frustrated. I thought “I want the freedom to choose thoughts that make me fearful if I want – don’t tell me what to do!”
I listened this week to a recording of a webinar by Judith Skutch Whitson, the chair of the Foundation of Inner Peace, about what she learned from the scribe of A Course in Miracles, Helen Schucman. Judith said that Helen knew the Course is true but she wouldn’t believe it. Helen chose not to practice or use the teachings as she did not want to give up her fears. Judith commented that it was Helens right to decide how to live her life. I love this story because it demonstrates that choosing fear is not a right or wrong choice, just a simple choice. (This is my understanding or what Judith said in the webinar and you can listen for yourself here)
Usually choosing fear leads to suffering and stress. The advantage of some of our fearful choices is that they result in so much pain that they stimulate us to find a different way of living.
You may be tempted to judge your fearful choices as negative but that isn’t helpful. When you become aware of what you are doing you are connected with the power of your mind to choose and that is a most important realization. You can then decide to use that same power, if you want, to choose loving or peaceful thoughts.
Awareness of the power of your mind is how you become a powerful miracle worker.
Experiencing the power of choice is what the Miracle Choice Game is all about.
