In the last month my laptop refused to start. Taking it to the computer shop the diagnosis was “corrupted hard drive.”
I didn’t want to fix it so I got out my very, very, old laptop. It functioned for about a week and then decided to stop working.
Hmm. Was it a symbol that my life was overloaded?
Sometimes we feel we’re going to burst inside. It’s like we’ve crammed so many thoughts and feeling into a tiny space we call our head or our body, that there’s no room left. Full to bursting!
Then we seek relief. You might go to your favorite therapist, walk in nature or swim in the sea. These all seem to bring some relief. Less effective ways of relief are comfort eating, watching Netflix, or having a few drinks. When doing these things, you perhaps have an image in your mind, conscious or unconscious, of having more space, breathing more deeply or your heart relaxing.
But then your “space” seems to fill up again. You notice the initial signs of stress and initiate some changes. You work less and go to the gym thinking that balance is what’s missing from your life.
But maybe it’s time for a more radical shift?
How about letting the idea go that the “space” your thoughts and feelings occupy is limited?
Are they really cramped up in your head anyway?
Perhaps your thoughts and feelings are free out there in the big wide world?
After all, when you think about it, your thoughts are connected to things and to situations in the world. Leave them where they already are, where they belong! Stop trying to collect them and cram them into your head.
But they are my thoughts and my feelings, they belong to me!
And you are the world, so you haven’t lost them.
But you have more space.
