This past weekend I had the grateful opportunity for the first time to hold a wedding ceremony. It was the celebration of the union of two people I love. Little did I know that I was saying “yes” to a grand opportunity to expand my heart and the ideas I had about love.
Over the days that followed, I had several insights during the day and woke up a few times in the middle of the night with an inspiration about what should be said to the couple and their guests during the wedding.
One message that I felt very strongly in my heart is that every love relationship – regardless if it’s a romantic love, love between parents and children, neighbors, co-workers, friends – involves great courage. It takes courage to be vulnerable and to know that all the love we give to a loved one is not part of a balance, not something that can be charged back, there is no guarantee. It is not math nor accounting. It is simply a gift we offer each other because, the more we express this love, the more we remember the love we are and that this source of love is inexhaustible.
It takes courage to recognize that each of us is a mystery in itself, a source of infinite possibilities, and the loved one is the same. And within the infinite possibilities that a person can choose to manifest, there is nothing certain, nothing you can count on.
When you understand that each gesture is a choice, you will understand that each expression of love is a true gift.
In every relationship, it takes a lot of presence, a lot of self-remembering, so that we don’t forget that, before we are two, we are one. It is important to look at a loved one and know that all their beauty lies in the fact that they are free and, in their freedom, they chose to notice us, to admire us, to love us and be in a relationship with us.
The loved one is not there to please us. Thus, we can look at them with curiosity and openness to receive whatever they manifest. What would it be like to wake up every morning and be thankful for the fact that a loved one has reiterated their choice to share this great adventure called life with you?
So, here is an invitation for you to ask yourself if you have the courage to allow all those who you love to be free. Also, because, regardless of what you want, whether you give them your permission or not, they always were and will always be free. And I assure you, the more you exercise it, the more you will recognize that you are the pure manifestation of love. The more you open to let people be what they are, the more you make room for yourself to be who you really are. In this way, God’s love flows through you to all beings. That is the only way to true happiness.
